Origins of the Caveman

What inspired the creation of the Caveman Fun Run?

Bill “Caveman” Kohlbrand

As a father, forester, 4-H leader, mountain biker, and general outdoor enthusiast Bill Kohlbrand was all about serving others and helping people get outside.

As the District Forester for Wyoming State Forestry District One in Newcastle, Bill had the opportunity to explore state lands all around northeast Wyoming. His vision for local trails brought about the Serenity trails as well as the first trail at the Flying V, the Cambria trail. The 5K, 10K, and 20K courses all use this trail on their routes. Bill wanted to provide trails where locals could get out and enjoy the beauty on the west side of the Black Hills.

Bill’s nickname “Caveman” came from his propensity to prefer more traditional or older methods, both in forestry as well as other aspects of life.

Today, the Bent Sprockets club has continued Bill’s legacy. Adding over 15 miles of additional trails at the Flying V Trails as well as maintaining the Serenity Trails. The club is also in the process of developing additional trails in Weston County.

The creation of the Caveman Fun Run is a way to not only honor Bill for his vision but to also continue it by inviting people to come out and enjoy the fruits of his efforts and foresight. Proceeds from the event will go to help Bent Sprockets to continue to maintain local trails, as well as in their continued efforts to develop and maintain additional trail systems.
